Happy Valentine’s Day!

Ah, the sweet day of love has arrived! Whether you have a “Treat Yoself” day, or are prepared with heart-patched teddy-bears, I hope your day is fantastic!

If you’re less than prepared, may I suggest heading on over to my Pinterest Board, Valentine’s Day, to check out some of the fun ideas I’ve found from around the web. You can find some of my own pins there (Valentines for Book Lovers and Star Wars Treat Boxes), plus lots of awesome ideas from lots of other pinners.

Shameless plug: if you’re looking for a fun, clean romance to read for you or somebody else, you can grab Happy Scoops (Kindle Version) HERE. It’s a story about the girl you love to hate having to get dressed up as an ice cream cone to sign dance away her speeding tickets. And, of course, her love interest might end up being a sign-dancing sandwich. What doesn’t sound amazing about that story???

However you choose to celebrate, have a wonderful day!

How to Write a Sweet Romance Novel

I have been watching a lot of romantic comedies, lately. What with Christmas romance movies (hello, Christmas movies on Netflix! #iwishihadthehallmarkchannel) and finishing up my Clean and Quirky Romance novel, Happy Scoops, I’ve had lots of opportunities. By the way, Happy Scoops is now available for purchase in ebook HERE or paperback purchase HERE! Woohoo! You can check out THIS POST to find out more if you’re interested.

Between watching and writing romantic comedies, I’ve learned quite a bit. If you care to read this slightly satirical list, you might actually get some good ideas, or just have a laugh if you’re not in the least interested in writing a sweet romance/romantic comedy novel, but enjoy being entertained by them.

Ready to learn a few of the secret weapons we romance writers use? Then read on!

1. As with any novel, there has to be a problem. However, in romance, and especially Christmas romances, there has to be some sort of deadline that propels a woman forward into finding a man and taking a chance on him. Sometimes the sexes are reversed. Maybe there’s a Christmas Ball she just has to have a date for? Or maybe he needs to find a mother for his children by Christmas? Also, it’s likely that if this doesn’t happen, well, I guess that all of Santa’s elves might die. Or something. You get the picture.

2. The first kiss has to be totally awkward. Like, mistletoe magically appears above them, or the man says; “Oh no! My lips accidentally fell on yours.” I’m going to tell you, if you don’t have this, then you might need to edit your manuscript. If you’re a reader and you haven’t encountered this in your Sweet Romance, then you might need to pick a different book. I had fun following this rule in Happy Scoops. Just sayin’.

3. You need a sappy story line at some point, although this one is optional. It is not optional, however, if you have a super-duper-inexplainably grumpy character that sulks around. When you get the audience to the point of writing him off, there has to be some sappy backstory that makes you suddenly care for said grump that you didn’t give a hoot about at first.

For instance, last night I was watching one such movie and I learned that Angry Main Character was angry because his fiance had died. Why this made him not want to sell his grandmother’s estate? I don’t really know. But I remember the sappy backstory. Do. Not. Forget this.

4. Do you like pets? Then throw one in for good measure. He’s definitely a great character to use to get the lonely souls together. Although, be careful! Some people don’t like pets, so you don’t want this pet to have too much of a main role. Just enough to be the same amount of cute as one of those animal pictures in those forwarded emails you get–not fifty of them.

Warning! Do not kill the pet! Not even if you think it’d be a great way to get the couple together. It’s just not worth it. How can you have a Happily Ever After if the dog is dead? And NO! The pet’s puppy is NOT a good enough substitute. Wait. Is there a movie like that? Yes, there is, though I’ve never seen it and I refuse to watch it. Just like your readers will cease to be your readers if you kill the pet.

5. Have you ever made a wish on a star, or on a snowflake, or maybe even just while gazing into a lake? Well, in your next romance novel, you can pretend that you are the main character and have said character make that wish. And you know what? You then get to make the star, Santa, time-traveling guardian or any other thing (the pet from number four?) make that dream a reality. In your novel, anyway. It’s preferable if this wish is the answer to #1, but, you know. Whatever.

6. Whether they had that awkward kiss in the beginning or not, nobody wants to read a book where the couple doesn’t end up having a little kiss at the end. You’d better do this, or nobody’s going to want to read your sappy, sweet romance. Tough words, but they’re true!

7. One thematic tactic you can take is to make sure that your main character has a name like Holly if you’re doing a Christmas film, or Bell, if your main character is going to end up in a ball. You know, the Bell of the Ball? Or how about Misty if you’re going with the whole, “Oh no! Mistletoe accidentally appeared above our heads and now we have to kiss,” theme.

Personally, I think I’m going to write a Christmas romance based on a girl named Misty, and I’m sure it will be a hit. “Misty and the Mistletoe.” Although, that title is probably already taken, or will be by Christmas 2017. Also, the name doesn’t really have to make sense. Just has to be tight enough that we get where you’re going with your little play on words.

8. Have you ever experienced a romantic relationship that went wrong? I’m pretty sure that most of these Hallmark romances were written by people who really, really, really wanted some relationship that went wrong to have gone right. So, using the power of an author, they write a romance, but disguise it a little. Voila! We have some quirky story that makes you wonder how anyone ever came up with the idea. So, feel free to write a romance based on a failed relationship and fix all of those missteps. Then, you’ll be able to think of that relationship as having ended Happily Ever After. It might make you feel better. Or possibly worse, if you discover what you did wrong in what could have been the relationship of the century. I’m thinking you should use #8 carefully.

Note: No, I was never forced to dress as an ice cream cone and work at my parents’ ice cream shop to pay off traffic tickets where I may or may not have discovered romance–the premise of Happy Scoops. See how I said that most romances are probably written by people with those kinds of relationships? “Most” is the key word, here.

9. There has to be that moment when the reader doesn’t think that things are going to work out. You know that point when the main character finds out that their significant other was lying, but the main character doesn’t know the whole story, so they take off and the relationship is devastated? It doesn’t have to include lying–maybe their ex comes back and professes that they actually do love the main character? Hmmm. Think about about it. You’ll come up with something good that leaves us hanging for a moment in preparation for the beauty of #10.

10. If you are writing a romance novel and you’re thinking, “Hmmm. Maybe I’ll get conceptual, metaphorical, or depressing at the end,” STOP! Nobody wants that. You just read what I wrote in #8. You need to end happily. That means that you end with a kiss, wedding, or in some way that informs the reader–without a doubt–that the couple is TOGETHER. Seriously, if you don’t have an H.E.A. (Happily Ever After), then you’re not writing a romance and your readers might end up throwing your book at you.

So, there you have it! Using these ten tips, you should be able to create an incredible sweet romance novel.

If you read through and enjoyed any of these, you are probably ready and trained to become a romance writer. Or, maybe you just want to read a romance novel?

Easy Star Wars Papercraft Cubes or Treat Boxes

You know those moments as a parent when you totally and completely turn into a sucker? Yeah. Well, the above was the result of one of those moments.

My boy and I got to hang out today, just he and I, so we went to the library as part of our day. So nice! While there, he grabbed some Star Wars books, then asked if we could get a Star Wars Origami book. While I really didn’t think that our library would have anything like that, he got his hopes up, only to have them dashed. Needless to say, we went home with my poor boy upset that he didn’t get a Star Wars craft book.

On our walk home, my mind was ticking. If you check out my Pinterest boards, you’ll see some of the Pokemon paper craft cubes we’ve been making lately. Although my little 6-year-old wanted a Yoda origami, I thought that I’d be able to–relatively easily–make a little cube paper craft Yoda.

I was right! I designed my little Yoda, modeled a cube style that I like that included a lid, then made it the perfect size for a little candy treat or treasure. Or, to be used simply as a fun paper toy. My boy was thrilled! And you know what? I was thrilled that I had designed something that was simple enough for him to do himself.

Have you looked up Star Wars paper crafts??? We’ve done a few, and let me tell you what! They are not for the faint of heart. However, after we printed out the Yoda cube that I designed, my boy didn’t need any help, which made him happy that he could “do it himself.”

I’m pretty sure we’ll be stuffing several more of these for Valentine gifts this year, attaching some of our little Valentine cards that we designed (find them HERE) to finish them off. Super easy–now that they’re made–and sure to make some buddies happy.

See??? Aren’t these guys just begging to be filled with a treat and handed out to happy recipients?

Of course, Valentine’s Day is coming up soon, so it comes to mind, however, these would be great birthday party favors. They could even be created as an activity for the birthday party, then add the goodie to it once the kiddos are done so they can take it home when the party’s over.

Yes, I did happen to get talked into making an R2-D2 after Yoda was finished. My boy brought me all of his R2-D2 toys and kept telling me which of his parts I was missing. In the end, I was quite happy with my R2-D2 design, but more importantly, my little guy was really happy!

Now, don’t judge me, but when my daughter came home, she requested Chopper. And…well, she’s super cute, so I made it for her!

Chopper and R2-D2 were definitely the most difficult to create–see all of those little boxes and circles??? They weren’t easy to insert. In the end, I’m glad I created them–my design skills were exercised and I plan on making some paper craft cubes just for Cookie, Broden and probably Fergus from my Broden and Cookie chapter book series. And probably a chicken-poopy box as well because Broden and Cookie cubes wouldn’t be complete without one! Right???

By the way, did you know that I have several FREE Broden and Cookie coloring pages? You can find some HERE and the rest are HERE.

If you’re ready to snag your free Yoda, R2-D2 and Chopper printable cubes for paper toys or treat boxes, click on the pictures below and you’ll be taken to the PDFs that’ll let the fun begin!

Each one comes with instructions to help guide you, but leave a comment or send me an email if you get stuck and I’d be happy to help. My hope is that I made this simple enough that most kiddos will be able to pretty much make these by themselves–maybe with just a little bit of directing, not the full-on takeover because the parent is trying to figure out how it works!

All you need is cardstock (paper will do, it’s just not as sturdy), scissors, tape or glue. Cut out, fold, then glue or tape in place!

Happy Crafting and please feel free to pin on your Pinterest boards, or share on social media! And if you end up making the cubes, I’d love to see your creations!

Also, although I can’t make any promises, are there any Star Wars characters you’d love to see added to this trio?

Free Valentine Printables for Book Lovers

Well, folks, I was at the store the other day and we’re definitely in the full swing of Valentine’s Day! The heart-shaped boxes of chocolates are calling to me, along with the teddy bears in mugs.

While we’ve purchased Valentine cards in the past, we usually make our own. I wasn’t sure what we’d do this year, but when I was making dinner the other night, the cheesiest little conversation-heart-like sayings kept coming to me, so I decided that it was a sign that I should jot them down and make some little cards for you all to print up.

So, here they are in all their goofiness! CLICK ON THE IMAGES to grab the PDF to print away.

Last year, we “Heart Attacked” my husbands car. My kids and I grabbed a favorite treat of his, cut out a bunch of hearts, then drove to his work and taped them all over the inside so that when he came out, he found his car decked out with hearts and a special snack on the seat.

You could totally use these 12 hearts–plus some of the blanks below–to deck out your somebody-special’s car!

OR, you could cut them out and tuck them into their lunch bag, work bag, coat pocket, taped onto the bathroom mirror, front door, onto the controller…you get the idea! That’s what I’ll be doing this year–I’ve got to change it up a bit, right?

Want to get really crazy? You could print out two copies in order to turn them into a little memory game–each time somebody gets a match, they get a choco-covered strawberry. The possibilities are endless!!

If you don’t like the Cheesiest of Cheesy little sayings that I came up with (my finest work, for sure), never fear! There are some blanks as well. Aaaanndd, since, you know, not everybody likes pink, my son decided that we needed to design some R2-D2 colored hearts.

If you’ll be showing yourself some love and appreciation on Valentine’s Day, feel free to check out any of my books by clicking HEREHappy Scoops is the first book in the Clean and Quirky Romance Series–or celebrate by snagging a free novella, Twenty-Five Candles, by clicking the button below.

Feel free to pin and share! I hope you enjoy!

Twenty-Five Candles – a Free Novella

So, I made a bit of a crazy goal for 2017, but honestly, I’m totally excited about it and so far I’m staying on track with my plan. I know some people hate making goals, but I really thrive on them–I even remember making resolutions when I was a little kid. This year, we sat down and made goals as a family as well and so far, I feel we’re doing pretty great!

Want to know what the goal is? Well, last year, I finished writing/wrote five books (Inheritance Aflame took me about 9 years to finish, but about 60% of the last draft was written in 2016), all of which you can find HERE.

My goal for 2017? DOUBLE IT! I’m going to write and publish 10 books this year.

While Happy Scoops is being published in 2017 (ebook up for preorder and out on January 31st! Paperback already out), I’m not counting it–it was written in November of 2016.

Here is Book #1: Twenty-Five Candles, a novella from the Clean and Quirky Romance stand-alone series. It’s a fun, quick read, plus, when you sign up for the Clean and Quirky Romance Readers’ List, it’s totally FREE!

Book Blurb:

When Anna Lewis was young, she made a wish to be married by her twenty-fifth birthday and just knew that her dream would come true. The problem is, becoming an adult isn’t as easy as she thought it would be.

Between giving up her nursing career and caring for her home-bound mother, Anna feels her dreams are passing her by. It’s only when—on her twenty-fourth birthday—Anna learns that a doctor is moving to town that she begins to hope once more.

However, when Anna finds out who the doctor is, conflict arises and her emotions are torn between her hometown boyfriend and the boy she always loved.

I’ll be keeping you all updated on my journey to #10, but in the meantime, if you’re interested, click the button below to snag your free ebook of Twenty-Five Candles

Happy Scoops – Upcoming Clean and Quirky Romance Novel – Cover Reveal!

Do you all remember how I participated in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in 2016? Well, after a lot of hard work, I’m pleased to say that “Happy Scoops,” the first novel of my stand-alone series, Clean and Quirky Romance, will be published just in time for a little Valentine’s Day Reading Indulgence. Woohoo!

Here is the back blurb of this romantic comedy/parody, Happy Scoops:

Chryssa Parker is about to start her senior year of high school and she knows that it’s going to be totes amazing.

As Team Captain of the Cheerleading Squad and President of the Student Body Government, Chryssa is ready to be the smartest and hottest that Intellectual Elite has ever graduated.

However, when a pile of traffic infractions show up in the Parker mailbox, Chryssa’s lawyer parents decide it’s time for Chryssa to learn some responsibility.

Forced to become a sign dancer dressed as a cone at her parent’s ice cream shop, Chryssa doesn’t think she’ll ever survive the job. Obligated to give up so much of her life, Chryssa is completely surprised when she learns what makes her truly Happy.

I’m going to tell you right now–this project was FUN! From taking the basic idea that had been dancing around my mind for three years, finishing it for NaNoWriMo2016, to designing the cover with my husband with real ice cream from our very favorite ice cream shop, Frite and Scoop in Astoria, OR, it’s been a blast. A lot of hard work, but super fun!

By the way, if you are ever in Astoria, head on in to Frite and Scoop–you will not be disappointed! Their handmade ice creams and Belgian fries are seriously incredible.

Intrigued? Well, here is the cover for this fun and spunky romance that I hope will get you excited to read it.

There are about a million things that I love about being an author, but my favorites would be that I get to try out new stories and finish the ones that suit me, and I constantly improve. I’m so proud of Happy Scoops–both process and writing show my growth and I’m excited for others to see that, too.

If you or somebody in your life enjoys a fun romance, you might want to consider snagging it for Valentine’s Day – Official Release Date: January 31st!

While you might find the paperback hanging around on Amazon a little earlier than that, if you’ve absolutely gotta have the novel ASAP and want to make sure it gets right to you, you can pre-order the ebook right now by clicking HERE.

Also, I’ve been working on a novella, “Twenty-Five Candles,” for the Clean and Quirky Romance Series–written just for those who sign up for the Clean and Quirky Romance Readers’ List.

It’s not up and ready to go yet, but check back soon! This FREE Book Bite will be available within a few days.

National Popcorn Day

Did you know that January 19th is National Popcorn Day? Well, to me, that sounds like, “Oh, goodie! I get to read–or write–while munching on a special treat of some homemade popcorn!”

This is my favorite recipe, so I thought I would share and remind you that, you know, you really ought to celebrate this holiday. Just make sure you take a trip to the library or your favorite ebook store first! Unless, that is, you’re reading something really great right now, in which case, you should continue on, then let me know if I should read it when you’re done 😉

1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil
1/4 Heaping Cup White Sugar
1/2 Cup Popcorn Kernels
1/4 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Ground Cinnamon

1.  In a large saucepan (4 qt.), heat the oil on medium-high (though closer to the medium side) with three kernels of corn.  Put the lid on.

2.  In the meantime, measure out the sugar, and stir together the cinnamon and salt to make a cinnamon-salt mixture.  Also, pull out your cookie sheet.  Set aside.

3.  After the three kernels pop, leave the lid on and wait 1 minute.  Using a large spoon, pull the three popped kernels out, then quickly stir in the sugar until pretty well combined.  Pour in the rest of the 1/2 Cup of kernels, and cover the pan with a lid again.  Shake the pan (move the pan back and forth over the burner quickly) so all the kernels can be coated with the sugar and oil.

4.  Let the kernels sit for about 15 seconds, then shake again.  Continue letting them sit for about 15 seconds and then shake for a few seconds until you hear kernels beginning to pop.

5.  Once the kernels begin popping, shake for a few seconds, then let the pan sit for a few seconds.  Continue shaking then resting until the popping slows down to one popping every one to two seconds.

6.  REMOVE FROM HEAT IMMEDIATELY!!  Carefully (watch out for any popping stragglers) tilt the pan away from you (and anyone else) and lift the lid.  Pour the corn out onto the cookie sheet and use the spoon to spread across the sheet.

7.  Once the Kettle Corn is spread over the cookie sheet, sprinkle the cinnamon-salt over the kettle corn.  Using either a spoon or your hands, toss to coat with the cinnamon-salt.  While tossing, pick out un-popped kernels.  They tend to stick to the caramelized popcorn instead of settling to the bottom.

8.  Allow to sit until cool enough to eat.  Store leftovers in an airtight container (or ziplock).

Failure Will Never Overtake Me

Have you heard this quote before? I found it the other night and I absolutely love it! I made some pretty hefty goals this year and–so far–they’re going well. Of course, I know that it’s only January and as seasons and life changes, certain things will appear more important than others.

While I accept that I may not make every single one of my goals, I know that by trying, my path will be further traveled than if I hadn’t.

I happened to find this quote at just the moment, however, when I was about to give up hope of succeeding or trying at all with one resolution in particular. Sometimes certain beasts appear too large to defeat, and this one happens to be my arch nemesis. At that pivotal moment when I was deciding whether I should give up the conquering of this monster in order to focus on other, more pleasant things, I found this quote and I knew that to not try is the true failure.

Whatever your goals, life difficulties, I hope that this quote helps you in some way, as well.

Onward!
